The average American diet contains a very large percentage of its overall calories from fat. But you may have heard this a lot of times: "In order to live longer, you should eat less fat and more carbohydrates."

But, it is a false statement that this all of the fat in your daily diet is bad for you. In fact, there are groups of people on the world whose diet contains a lot of fat - the Eskimos for example. Here's what you should know, it is not absolutely the fat, but the sugar and processed foods that gave modern mankind degenerative diseases like heart attack, stroke or diabetes mellitus.

Until our diets became influenced by Soft Drinks and French Fries, the Eskimos ate a daily diet which included large quantities of blubber - a very saturated fat, and yes, very high in cholesterol. Cardiac illness was completely unknown among the Eskimos until they took hold of Western ways with diet and life style. But this does not advocate that eating cholesterol rich foods are completely safe for you, no. This is to simply compare and see how our modern diet has caused us so much health trouble.


Too much weight gain, coupled with our modern sedentary lifestyle which lacks physical exercise, is a heart problem risk factor for both men and women because it leads to unhealthy increase in the blood pressure, blood lipids or fats, and can lead to damaging blood sugar levels. All of the mentioned consequence do have a profound influence in increasing the risk of heart attack. Being overweight can lead to these manifestations which are a real cause of heart disease. Here is one thing for sure - you can get overweight eating lots of sugar and carbohydrates. It is being overweight that is a problem, not the fat in the diet.

You may ask, how can eating too much caloric rich foods or eating too much sweets can make you overweight? After all, they are not fats.

Yes, carbohydrates are not fats. But the body can convert carbohydrate into fats which can be deposited around your tummy, around your internal organs, and can lead to unwanted manifestations above if left at an uncontrolled level. It is important to know that fat around the waist is the most dangerous of all fats in our body.

Because much of the foods in our modern diet consists of empty calories, that is, they contain almost only carbohydrates and devoid of other nutrients and fiber, thus our foods are called empty calories, this means that we eat a lot of carbohydrates in our diet. Carbohydrates are calories. And calories are our fuel for to produce energy. Much of man's modern lifestyle is sedentary. Without much physical activity but our diet is very rich in carbohydrates, our body sees that there is a surplus of calories. So it has to store them anyway because it has not been used or transformed into energy. What our body does is to convert these calories (which is glucose actually, the simplest form of carbohydrates) into fats in the process of glycogenesis which our body normally stores in the liver and muscles. But if there is too much to store, our body will store these fats around our internal organs and around our tights, etc. That is why people can get overweight by eating too much carbohydrate rich foods.
